During World War II, the US Government melted coins for their metal content to use in the war effort. In 1943, the penny was made out of steel because copper was in short supply, and the 1944 and 1945 pennies are often called “shell pennies,” because they were made from used shell casings shipped back to the United States. The pennies in this set date from 1941-1945. A genuine uncancelled stamp from the WWII era completes this historic collection.
