Item #: ANCT DENARISEVERUS 4
These silver coins were struck from around 193-217 AD and are slightly larger than a modern US Dime. The obverses feature portraits of the family of Severus, Septimius Severus, his wife Julia Domna and their two sons Caracalla and Geta, who ruled the Roman Empire for over 40 years during the period of transition in the empire between peace and constant warfare.
The influence of the denarius is still around today. The denarius is in the common Arabic name for a currency unit, the dinar, still used in several modern Arabic-speaking nations. Other derivations from the Latin “denarius” still exist also, for example the Spanish word dinero, Italian word denaro, and the Portuguese word dinheiro, which all have a common meaning of “money”.
