The history of the Morgan Silver Dollar is filled with political intrigue, government boondoggles, and the romance of the Wild West. There was no need for silver dollars in commerce when the Morgans were minted, but the pressure for the government to buy the masses of silver produced by the legendary Comstock Lode was relentless. More than 650 million Morgans were produced, most of which went immediately into Treasury vaults. In 1964 an audit revealed about 3 million Carson City Morgans still in the Treasury vaults. The GSA (Government Services Administration) was given authority to sell them. Special packaging was designed for these “GSA Morgans”, but over the years, many of these coins have been removed from their packaging for grading, making these Morgans more and more rare and attractive to collectors.
